This guide takes an Elo I-Series 5 for Android from the box to a working till: mounting, power, first start, network, USB peripherals and your POS app. It follows Elo's user manual for the Standard model and applies to both sizes we sell.

    You'll need
    • The power brick and the European power cable from the box
    • A Wi-Fi network, or an Ethernet cable to your router or switch
    • A Google account for the Play Store, or an EloView account if you manage devices with EloView
    • A stand or VESA mount (75 mm on the 10.1-inch model, 75 or 100 mm on the 15.6-inch model)
    • Optional: your receipt printer, barcode scanner and cash drawer

    Before you start

    Know your model

Both models run Android 14 with Google Play Services on a Qualcomm QCS6490 processor with 8 GB RAM and 64 GB storage. Elo states that upgrades to Android 16 and a planned Android 18 come with an Elo OS 360 subscription.

    • E540294: 15.6-inch screen, 1920 × 1080, black (product page)

    Check the box

Elo lists the I-Series 5 unit, one power brick, a North American and a European power cable, a Quick Install Guide and screws for the cable cover door. Remove all protective film and packing, check the unit for damage and contact us if anything is missing.

Decide how you will manage the device

On first start you choose between enrolling the device in EloView, Elo's remote management service, and using the standard Android home screen with Google services. EloView suits several tills managed centrally and needs Wi-Fi during enrolment. A single till with a POS app from the Play Store works well with the Android home screen.

Mount the unit or fit a stand

The I-Series 5 is a fixed tablet: it goes on a stand or a mount that uses the VESA holes on the back. Connect all cables before you mount the unit, because the connectors are hard to reach afterwards.

    10.1-inch (E539154) 15.6-inch (E540294)
    VESA pattern 75 × 75 mm 75 × 75 mm or 100 × 100 mm (100 mm uses a spacer)

Other Elo stands Short Tabletop Stand E160104, Tabletop Flip Stand E924077 Tabletop Stand E044162, Tabletop Flip Stand E924077

Elo also offers a wall mount kit (E143088), pole mounts, a shelf mount bracket and a floor stand. Elo notes that the display size and weight limit the mounting angle, so check the mount's documentation before you tilt a 15.6-inch unit steeply. The Z20 Stand adds four USB 3.0 Type-A ports and an RJ12 cash drawer port, which helps at a till with several peripherals.

    Important

Use screws no longer than the thread depth above. Longer screws can damage the unit. With the PoE module fitted, use the longer M4 screws supplied with the PoE kit: they pass through the module into the VESA holes.

    Connect the cables

Most connectors sit under a cover on the back of the unit. Elo's drawings show these:

    • DC in for the power brick
    • Ethernet (Gigabit, RJ45)
    • USB 3.0 Type-A for a receipt printer, scanner or hub
    • USB-C for an Elo USB-C monitor or other USB devices
    • Four micro-USB Elo Edge Connect ports for Elo peripherals such as scanners, card readers and a status light
    • microSD slot (cards up to 2 TB)
    • GPIO for peripherals such as a motion sensor (output max. 5 V, 200 mA)

Route the cables tidily: Elo provides hooks with tie-wraps inside the cable area. Then refit the cable cover. Elo includes two screws to secure the cover. A Kensington lock slot is available for a security cable.

    Choose the power source

    Power brick (standard)

Connect the power brick to DC in and to the European power cable. Elo's 90 W cable kit (E572635) replaces the standard 65 W brick when you power an Elo USB-C monitor from the I-Series 5.

    Power over Ethernet (optional)

PoE needs Elo's PoE++ Module Kit for I-Series 5 (E669163), fitted under the PoE cover on the back of the unit. Elo recommends a switch or injector to IEEE 802.3bt (60 W or more).

    • With 802.3at (about 25.5 W), the PoE power manager turns off Wi-Fi, the USB-A and USB-C ports, the Edge Connect ports, GPIO and the external display. You can switch the parts you need back on in Settings › Connected devices › Connection preferences › PoE power manager.
    • Elo does not recommend 802.3af switches or injectors.
    • For a passive injector without LLDP, connect it before you power on and turn on Force PoE 51W power in the PoE power manager. The device restarts.
    Important

Never connect PoE and the power brick at the same time.

Switch on and complete first setup

    1. The unit starts as soon as it gets power. If it stays off, press the power button for about half a second.
    2. Don't touch the screen while it starts up.
    3. Choose your setup method on the first screen and follow the on-screen steps. To enrol in EloView you must connect to Wi-Fi.
    4. If you chose the Android home screen, sign in to the Play Store with your Google account so you can install apps.
    5. Set a screen lock afterwards. Elo points out that the default is a simple swipe, with no PIN or password.

Learn the power button now: press briefly to wake the screen, hold for more than 2 seconds for the shutdown and restart menu, and hold for 12 seconds to force a shutdown. The power light is white when on and flashes white when idle.

    Connect to the network

    Ethernet

Plug the cable into the Ethernet port. The I-Series 5 prefers Ethernet automatically when both are available. If it stays on Wi-Fi, turn off Use Wi-Fi in the Wi-Fi settings and switch on Ethernet.

    Wi-Fi

    1. Open Settings › Network & internet › Internet.
    2. Turn on WLAN and select your network.
    3. Enter the password and tap Connect.

The I-Series 5 supports Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax. If your 5 GHz network uses DFS channels and doesn't appear, Elo describes a DFS option under the advanced Wi-Fi preferences.

    Connect your peripherals

    Receipt printer

Connect a USB receipt printer to the USB 3.0 Type-A port, or put a network printer on the same network as the I-Series 5. Then add the printer in your POS app. For an Epson printer, see the TM-m30III setup guide.

    Barcode scanner

A USB scanner in keyboard mode works in any app that has a text field: plug it into the USB-A port or a hub. Elo's own Edge Connect peripherals, such as the 2D scanner E384627 (SE4720), attach to the peripheral mounts on the unit and plug into an Edge Connect port.

    Cash drawer

Elo's port list for the I-Series 5 has no cash drawer port. Connect the drawer to the receipt printer's drawer kick connector (see connect a cash drawer to an Epson receipt printer), or to the RJ12 port of the Elo Z20 Stand. On the Z20 Stand the port must be set to 12 V or 24 V to match your drawer.

    More USB devices

The unit has one full-size USB port. For more devices, use a powered USB hub or the Z20 Stand's four USB ports. Three of the four Edge Connect ports supply up to 500 mA and one supplies up to 1.2 A.

Install and set up your POS app

Install your POS app from the Play Store, or push it to the device from EloView if you enrolled it there. Then add the printer and test a sale.

Loyverse POS, for example, runs on Android. Loyverse does not list Elo devices, but it documents USB printers (ESC/POS) on Android: in the app go to Settings, tap +, choose Other model as the printer model and USB as the interface, select the printer shown as VID-PID, then tap Print test and Save. On the I-Series 5 you plug the printer into the USB-A port instead of using the OTG adapter Loyverse describes for phones and tablets. See connect an Epson receipt printer to Loyverse POS for Epson models and network printing.

All Elo documents for this model are on Elo's 10-inch I-Series 5 page and Elo's 15-inch I-Series 5 page. The full manual is the I-Series 5 for Android user manual (UM600843). If something doesn't work, see I-Series 5 troubleshooting or all I-Series 5 guides.

    Frequently asked questions
