Zebra ZT411 faded or patchy print: how to fix it

Light, patchy or uneven print on a ZT411 almost always comes down to one of five things: darkness and speed, the ribbon and label pairing, printhead pressure, a dirty printhead or a worn one. Work through them in that order. The first fixes take seconds; the last one needs a new part.

Fixes

1. Print too light or too dark overallDarkness and speed

CauseDarkness and speed do not suit your supplies, or the driver or label software overrides the printer settings.

Fix

  1. Quickest route: on the home screen touch Wizards › Print › Start Print, follow the prompts, and choose Print Quality Assistance at the last step. Pick how many test labels to print, then choose the best one. The printer saves the darkness and speed used for that label.
  2. To set it by hand, open Print › Print Quality › Darkness. The range is 0.0 to 30.0. Change it in small steps and keep the lowest value that gives clean, solid print.
  3. Then try a lower value in Print › Print Quality › Print Speed. Slower speeds usually give better print.
  4. Set the same values in your label software and in the ZDesigner driver (Printers & scanners › your printer › Printing preferences), otherwise they can overwrite the printer settings.

Print too dark or barcodes not scanning? Lower the darkness, try a slower speed and keep 3.2 mm of blank space around each barcode. See also our ZDesigner driver guide.

Tip

Do not send print jobs from your computer while a wizard is running on the printer.

2. Ribbon and labels do not matchWax, wax/resin or resin

CauseEach ribbon type suits certain label materials, and supplies not rated for high-speed printing print poorly at full speed.

Fix

  1. Check the label material and pick the ribbon type from the table below. Compatible ribbons and labels for the ZT411 are listed on this page.
  2. Make sure the ribbon is coated on the outside, which the standard ZT411 needs. Press the sticky side of a label onto the outside of the roll: if ink comes off, the ribbon is right.
  3. Not sure your labels need ribbon? Scratch the label with a fingernail. A black mark means direct thermal: remove the ribbon and set Print › Print Quality › Print Type to Direct Thermal.
Ribbon Labels Durability
Wax Coated and uncoated paper, tags Low chemical exposure, little abrasion
Wax/resin Top-coated paper, matte synthetics Moderate chemicals or abrasion
Resin All synthetics, gloss paper Harsh chemicals, heavy abrasion
3. One side lighter, or poor print on thick labelsPrinthead pressure dials

CausePrinthead pressure is too low overall or uneven across the label. The ZT411 has two pressure dials, inside and outside, each with positions 1 to 4. Thick labels and narrow labels need different settings.

Fix

  1. Open the media door and find the two pressure dials (see the figure).
  2. Set both dials to the starting positions for your label width in the first table.
  3. Print a few labels and adjust one position at a time with the second table.
  4. Keep the lowest pressure that still prints well. Extra pressure wears the printhead faster.

4. Voids, specks or slowly fading printDirty printhead or platen

CauseInk, adhesive and dust build up on the printhead and platen roller and block the heat from reaching the label.

Fix

  1. Let the printhead cool, then touch the metal frame to discharge static. Switching the printer off is optional but recommended; it clears temporary label formats.
  2. Open the media door, lift the printhead-open lever and remove the ribbon and labels.
  3. Wipe the brown strip of the printhead from end to end with a swab from Zebra's Preventive Maintenance Kit (47362), or a lint-free swab dipped in 99.7% isopropyl alcohol. Let it dry.
  4. Turn the platen roller by hand while you clean it with a swab, then let it dry.
  5. Reload ribbon and labels, close the printhead and press PAUSE.
  6. Still poor? Use Save-a-Printhead cleaning film, which Zebra also specifies for 600 dpi printers.

On linerless printers, never use alcohol on the dark brown platen: dab it with the sticky side of a linerless label instead.

5. White lines or "REPLACE PRINTHEAD"Damaged or worn printhead

CauseLabels and ribbon slowly wear the printhead's protective coating. A damaged element leaves an unprinted line in the same place on every label.

Fix

  1. Clean the printhead first (Fix 4) to rule out dirt.
  2. If the line stays, or the display shows "REPLACE PRINTHEAD" or "HEAD ELEMENT OUT", contact us for a genuine Zebra printhead or service.
  3. To protect the new head, use ribbon at least as wide as the labels and keep darkness and pressure low.

Frequently asked questions

What darkness setting should I use on a Zebra ZT411?

There is no single right value. The range is 0.0 to 30.0; use the lowest setting that gives clean print, or let the Print Quality Assistance wizard choose it.

Why did my ZT411 print get lighter after I changed the settings?

Your label software or the ZDesigner driver probably sends its own darkness and speed with each job. Set the same values there.

How often should I clean the ZT411 printhead?

After every ribbon roll in thermal transfer mode, and after every label roll (or 500 ft of fanfold) in direct thermal mode. Clean more often if your labels shed dust.

Why is only one side of my label faded?

Printhead pressure is uneven. Raise the inside dial if the left side is light, or the outside dial if the right side is light.
