Datalogic Heron HD3430
The Datalogic Heron HD3430 is a 2D barcode scanner designed for the checkout counter. Unlike a warehouse scanner, it is built to sit in plain view of customers — compact, available in black or white, and with a look that suits a shop counter rather than a loading dock.
2D matters more every year
The HD3430 reads 2D codes — QR codes, Data Matrix and GS1 DataMatrix — as well as traditional 1D barcodes. Three things in retail now need that:
- Codes on phone screens — loyalty cards, digital coupons, e-tickets and mobile payment codes. A 1D laser cannot read a screen reliably; an imager can.
- The GS1 2D transition — retail is moving from the traditional EAN barcode to 2D codes that carry batch numbers, expiry dates and more. Scanners bought today should be able to read them.
- Age and expiry checks — data carried inside a GS1 2D code can be used at the till rather than read off the pack.
If you are replacing checkout scanners now, buying 2D is the choice that doesn't need revisiting in two years. We wrote about the transition in more detail: GS1 Sunrise 2027 →
Black or white
The HD3430 comes in black (BK) and white (WH). On a counter the scanner is part of the customer-facing furniture, so the colour is a real decision rather than a cosmetic one — white suits pharmacy, bakery and boutique counters, black disappears into darker fixtures. Part numbers also differ by the stand and cable supplied; the exact configuration is listed on each product page.
HD3430 or HD3130?
The two models look the same and sit on the counter the same way. The difference is what they read:
- HD3430 — 2D imager. Reads phone screens and 2D codes. The right choice for new installations.
- HD3130 — 1D linear imager. Reads traditional barcodes only, at a lower price. Sensible for replacing a broken unit in a fleet that is still fully 1D.
Both are rated IP40 — built for indoor counter use, not for a warehouse or outdoor environment. If the scanner will be dropped on concrete or used in a dusty area, an industrial model is the better fit.
All Heron scanners below are CE certified and covered by manufacturer warranty.
