Zebra ZC300 vs Evolis Primacy 2 vs Zenius 2: ID Card Printers

Zebra ZC300 vs Evolis Primacy 2 vs Zenius 2 is the shortlist most offices end up with when they need an ID card printer for employee badges. All three print 300 dpi dye-sublimation cards, all three carry a three-year warranty, and on paper they look interchangeable. They are not. The differences that matter are dual-sided printing, how many cards the feeder holds, what ships in the box and what it costs to upgrade later. This comparison uses the exact part numbers we stock, so you can order the right one first time.

Which ID card printer should you order?

Your situation Order this Why
Small office, under 300 badges a year, one PC, front only Evolis Zenius 2 Classic (ZN2-0001-E) Cheapest of the three, USB only, design software included
Reception desk shared over the network, front only Evolis Zenius 2 Expert (ZN2-0002) Adds Ethernet and YMCKOO ribbon support for a UV security overlay
HR or security team, front only now, may need the back later Evolis Primacy 2 (PM2-0001-E) or Zebra ZC300 (ZC31-000C000EM00) Both are single-sided with USB and Ethernet, and both can be upgraded to dual-sided in the field
Badges with photo on the front and rules, barcode or return address on the back Zebra ZC300 dual-sided (ZC32-000C000EM00) or Evolis Primacy 2 dual-sided (PM2-0025-E) Built-in card flipper prints both sides in one pass
Large batches, campus cards, visitor cards printed in bulk Primacy 2 or ZC300, not Zenius 2 100-card feeder instead of 50, faster colour throughput

How do the specs compare side by side?

These figures come from the manufacturer data sheets for each model. Print speeds are best-case batch figures over USB; real throughput with photos and database fields is lower on every printer. In black-only mode the ZC300 is quoted at up to 900 cards/hour and the Zenius 2 at up to 700.

Single-sided or dual-sided: do employee badges need the back?

Most employee badges do not. A photo, name, department and a barcode or QR code all fit on the front of a CR80 card. The back becomes useful when you want a "return if found" address, site rules, an emergency number or a second barcode for a canteen or time-attendance system.

If you are unsure, buy a single-sided Primacy 2 or ZC300 rather than a Zenius 2. Both can be converted to dual-sided later with a field upgrade kit. The Zenius 2 cannot, so if the back side becomes a requirement in year two you buy a new printer. If the back side is already on the wish list, order the dual-sided model straight away and skip the upgrade step.

One practical point: dual-sided colour badges need a YMCKOK ribbon, which prints colour on the front and black on the back. On the ZC300 that is 800300-360EM. A standard YMCKO ribbon on a dual-sided printer works too, but you burn a full colour panel set for a back side that only needs black text.

Zebra ZC300 vs Evolis Primacy 2: where do they actually differ?

These two are the real head-to-head. Same class, similar price tier, both 100-card feeders, both networked as standard.

  • Speed: Primacy 2 is quoted faster in colour (280 vs 200 cards/hour single-sided). For a company printing 20 badges a week this makes no difference. For a university issuing 2,000 student cards in September, it does.
  • Card thickness: the ZC300 feeder adjusts itself to anything from 10 to 40 mil. If you print on thin 10 mil cards one day and thick 40 mil cards the next, nobody has to touch a lever.
  • Lamination: only the Primacy 2 can take a lamination module. If your security team wants holographic patches or a protective varnish against wear, that settles it.
  • Encoding: the ZC300 has the wider menu, including UHF RFID and an EMV Level 1 certified contact encoder. For normal office access control with MIFARE or pre-encoded proximity cards, both are fine.
  • Software: Evolis puts a design licence in the box. Zebra does not, unless you buy a Quick Start kit such as ZC31-000CQ00EM00, which adds a YMCKO ribbon, 200 blank cards and CardStudio 2.0 Standard. If you have no badge software yet, compare kit price to kit price, not bare printer to bare printer.
  • Size: the single-sided ZC300 is 157 mm wide and weighs 4.0 kg, slim enough to sit beside a reception monitor. The dual-sided version is 85 mm deeper.

Our honest verdict: if you already run Zebra label printers and want one driver family and one supplier for ribbons, take the ZC300. If you need lamination or the fastest colour batch speed, take the Primacy 2. Neither is a wrong choice for a normal office.

When is the cheaper Zenius 2 the right call?

More often than resellers admit. A 50-card feeder is no handicap if you print five badges for new starters each month. The Zenius 2 Classic is noticeably cheaper than a ZC300 or Primacy 2 and is the smallest of the three. It is the right printer for small offices, gyms, clubs and schools that print on demand at a desk.

It is the wrong printer if you print in batches, if you may ever need the back side, or if several PCs need to share it and you bought the USB-only Classic. In that last case, the Expert (ZN2-0002) fixes the network problem for a modest step up.

How do you read the part numbers before ordering?

Zebra card printer part numbers carry the configuration in the code. Evolis uses sequential codes, so you have to check the configuration per SKU.

Part number What it means
ZC31-000C000EM00 ZC300, single-sided (ZC31), no encoder, EMEA version (EM)
ZC32-000C000EM00 ZC300, dual-sided (ZC32), no encoder
ZC31-0M0C000EM00 ZC300, single-sided, with magnetic stripe encoder (M)
ZC31-000CQ00EM00 ZC300, single-sided, Quick Start kit (Q) with ribbon, cards and CardStudio
PM2-0001-E Primacy 2, single-sided, LED panel, USB and Ethernet
PM2-0025-E Primacy 2, dual-sided, LED panel, USB and Ethernet
PM2-0013-E Primacy 2, dual-sided, colour LCD touchscreen, USB and Ethernet
ZN2-0001-E Zenius 2 Classic, single-sided, USB
ZN2-0002 Zenius 2 Expert, single-sided, USB and Ethernet

What does it cost to run each printer?

The printer is a one-off. Ribbons and cards are what you keep buying. A standard YMCKO ribbon prints around 200 full-colour sides on all three models: on the ZC300 that is 800300-250EM, with a 300-image version 800300-255EM. Evolis YMCKO ribbons for Primacy and Zenius come in 200-print cassettes and cassette-free Easy4Pro refills. For text-only visitor cards, a black monochrome ribbon (Zebra 800300-301) gives far more prints per roll and costs much less per card.

Two mistakes we see often. First, ordering a ribbon for the wrong printer family: Zebra and Evolis ribbons are chipped and not interchangeable. Second, buying the cheapest PVC cards: rough or dusty cards leave voids in the colour and wear the printhead faster. Standard 0.76 mm white PVC cards such as Zebra 104523-111 are a safe default.

Common questions

Can I print on pre-encoded access control cards?

Yes. MIFARE and proximity cards printed after encoding work normally, as long as the card surface is flat and printable. Thick clamshell cards do not feed through any of these printers.

Do I need an encoder in the printer?

Only if you want to write data to the chip or stripe while printing. If your access control supplier delivers pre-encoded cards, a printer without an encoder is enough.

Which printer works with a Mac?

Zebra provides ZC300 drivers for Windows, macOS and Linux (Ubuntu). Evolis Premium Suite covers Windows and macOS on both Evolis models, and Linux on the Primacy 2.

How long does a printhead last?

All three come with a three-year warranty, and on the ZC300 and Primacy 2 that warranty includes the printhead. Clean the card path every ribbon change and use clean cards, and the head usually outlives the warranty.

Can a single-sided Zenius 2 be upgraded later?

No. If you might need the back side, start with a ZC300 or Primacy 2.

Browse every model and configuration in our plastic card printer range, then add ribbons, blank cards and cleaning kits from ID card printer accessories. If you are still undecided, go back to the decision table at the top: badges per year and whether you need the back side are the two answers that pick the part number.
