The Zebra DS4608-HC is the healthcare version of Zebra's premium DS4608 corded 2D handheld scanner, designed for use throughout the whole hospital. Its disinfectant-ready Healthcare White housing withstands constant wiping with hospital disinfectants, its high-density focus and white illumination read tiny, curved and colour-coded barcodes on medicine bottles, IV bags, syringes and specimen trays, and its NICU-safe LED aimer and vibrating night mode help keep patients undisturbed. It is pre-configured for healthcare applications right out of the box and backed by a 5-year (60-month) Zebra warranty. This version, DS4608-HC4000BVZWW, is supplied as the scanner only – an interface cable is not included.

- ✅ Zebra DS4608-HC scanner – DS4608-HC4000BVZWW, Healthcare White, disinfectant-ready housing
- ❌ Interface cable – NOT included
- ❌ Stand – not included
⚠️ Please note: this version does not include a cable. The scanner cannot be connected to a computer or POS system without one, so please order an interface cable separately – for most setups the Zebra USB cable CBA-U21-S07ZBR is the right choice. Alternatively, choose a version that already includes a USB cable (see the comparison table below).
💡 Want hands-free scanning? Add the white healthcare Zebra Gooseneck Intellistand 20-71043-0BR to your order – it matches the scanner's Healthcare White housing (the black Zebra stand 20-71043-04R also fits). The scanner switches to hands-free mode automatically when placed in the stand.
Key Features
- Disinfectant-ready housing – the Healthcare White plastics are designed to withstand regular cleaning with popular hospital disinfectants, and the screw and speaker holes are covered to limit the build-up of bacteria (see Zebra's Product Reference Guide for the list of approved cleaners).
- Reads virtually every barcode in the hospital – 1D and 2D codes on patient wristbands, medication, IV bags, syringes, blood bags and specimen trays, as well as QR codes and other barcodes on phone and tablet screens.
- High-density focus with PRZM intelligent imaging – an 800 MHz processor and a 1280 × 800 megapixel sensor read tiny and curved barcodes on medicine bottles, IV bags and syringes – down to 2 mil (Code 39) and 4 mil (Data Matrix) – as well as damaged and poorly printed codes.
- White illumination – warm white LEDs make it easy to scan barcodes on colour-coded specimen trays and biopsy cassettes.
- NICU-safe LED aimer – a highly visible green LED aiming dot instead of a laser, so the scanner can be used throughout the hospital, including the neonatal intensive care unit.
- Night mode with vibration – choose haptic/vibration feedback, the good-decode LED, an adjustable beep or the Direct Decode Indicator; in night mode a quick press of the trigger toggles between beep and vibration, so patients are disturbed as little as possible.
- Preferred Symbol and Multi-Code Data Formatting – on blood bags and other items with several barcodes, output only the barcode you need, or capture several barcodes with one trigger pull and send them in the order your application expects.
- Handheld or hands-free – place the scanner in the optional Gooseneck Intellistand and it switches to hands-free mode automatically – ideal in the lab and pharmacy.
- Plug and play – pre-configured for everyday healthcare applications; auto-host-detect cables select USB, RS232 or IBM 46XX automatically. Uses the same Zebra cables as the DS4608, DS2208 and LS2208 and supports more than 90 international keyboards.
- Built to last – withstands repeated 1.8 m drops to concrete and 2,000 tumbles; IP52 sealing protects against spills, the double-sealed optics and recessed exit window protect against dust, liquids and scratches, and the Zebra warranty runs for 60 months.
- Free management tools – configure with 123Scan, manage remotely with Scanner Management Service (SMS) and integrate with EHR/EMR applications using the Zebra Scanner SDK (Zebra DataCapture DNA).
Ideal Applications
- Positive patient identification and verification – at admission, in the ER and triage and at the bedside (including newborn ankle bands in the NICU)
- Medication administration and verification at the point of care
- Hospital pharmacy – medication intake, dispensing checks and inventory
- Laboratory specimen track and trace, including colour-coded trays and biopsy cassettes
- Operating room – tracking of surgical supplies, instruments and implants
- Electronic health record (EHR/EMR) access in hospitals, outpatient clinics and care facilities

Not sure which version you need? If your workstations already have a Zebra DS4608, DS2208 or LS2208 cable, the scanner-only version is the most economical choice; for a new workstation, pick the USB kit with the cable included. For retail and general-purpose scanning, see the standard Zebra DS4608. Compare other models in our Handheld Barcode Scanners collection or contact our team for volume pricing.
